I was pleasantly surprised while reading this. At first, although it was a good story, the idea of it had me thinking, "Oh, sure - a girl trying to pass as a man." However, not far into the story the author lets you know the girl, Ella Brown, truly does not feel at all feminine and prefers man's clothing and behaviors. While continuing as a bounty hunter for the money it could bring, Ella is searching out a man to whom her much-loved but now deceased brother, Cal, trustingly gave money in a business deal. Ella is hoping by spring to meet up with Tigger Grandy, who should by then have the deed to land she can now call her own and settle on for the rest of her life. When John Snow, a disillusioned former lawyer (now a vigilante) sneaks into her room over a saloon, he is surprised to find the man he wanted is actually a woman. But, then, he's only interested in why she's asking people about Grandy, because John is looking for him, also. Circumstances keep the two, Ella nad John, traveling in the same direction: Ella hoping to get the needed deed from Grandy and John wants to capture Grandy, the murderer. Over the months they search together, John tries to prove to Ella that she truly is a female - a smart and worthwhile female others would appreciate, if she'd only realize it. Ella refuses to see that side of herself and continues to act mannish, in spite of landing in jail after starting a saloon brawl, needing John to awaken his long-sleeping law skills to get her out.
Later, at Elk City, a murder is committed during the night in the room next to Ella's. In trying to stop the murderer, Ella unwittingly becomes the suspect when the culprit leaves her to face the consequences. Despite serious injuries, John manages to track down the man and bring him back to Elk City, where John's legal skills are desparately needed to save Ella from a hanging.
This story becomes engrossing; it creeps up on the reader, and I found it hard to put down. The characters are interesting, with varying yet similar backgrounds, such different needs and qualities. As their closeness grows, so does the need for Ella to embrace who and what she is; but she will not. It takes a huge dose of reality to finally open her eyes.
