"This is what you shall do: Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income...” see full review » see other reviews » |

This small book with the full text of Leaves of Grass in it has been a constant companion of mine since I was in junior high. It has travelled around the world, and across the U.S. with me. Everyone should read it!!”

I first read Whitman at fifteen and was struck by the cadence of his verse as much as the content. It was like he was trying to wrap his arms around the entire world
and take it all in. Were he alive today, I am sure he would have been enraptured by the Internet! I believe he would have also been a Deep Ecologist.
His "appeal" to the reader that begins the 1855 edition has been one of the defining credos of my life, more than anything else, certainly more than religion or any school of thought. Profoundly earthy, profoundly spirtual, profoundly human.”
“It's like a religious text...beautiful and spiritual poetry.”

More clean and direct than later editions, this is Walt at the beginning of his career, and it's worth comparing this version to some of the later ones to watch Whitman revise himself in light of subsequent experiences such as his work as a wound dresser in the Civil War. His great enthusiasm for America is undiminished here. THe difference between the plain spoken free verse of Leaves of Grass and so much of the rest of 19th century poety is amazing. One of the most innovative poets in all of 19th century literature in any language.”
