“Good book, kind of a strange ending but a good one.”

The ending was interesting, and I like Ms. Lackey's bravery in killing off her main character - a bold move that not many authors can pull off. It did remind me of King's Firestarter though...”

The physical details of Valdemar is so rich that sometimes she goes a little overboard--not that I'm complaining ;). I love this book, but Lan really got on my nerves sometimes. I understand that he is bullied and lonely and living in a strange city with his socialite parents, but he just seemed to be self-absorbed and spoiled. Also, I felt sorry for Elenor and her secret crush for him, but that whole subplot seemed to add nothing more to the story, and perhaps could have been glossed over. That aside, the ending seemed a bit rushed, but overall, a very solid work and an excellent introduction to the Valdemar series.”

As always Mercedes' writing is beautiful and she writes characters that you really care about. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something to read.”

Lavan, though he meets all the prerequisites to be a Valdemar Herald (which include selfless and honesty to name a few), also is met with problems from his magical gift, which can only be used for destruction. The dynamic between Lavan and his Companion (the white "horses" that choose Heralds in the Valdemar universe) is an unforgettable one. I love how Lackey takes something that she has used to great effect in her earlier stories set in this universe—the concept of a "lifebond"—and develops it further. This is a good book for someone who loves Lackey's other works or anyone that is new to them—though I would recommend reading at least one of the other Valdemar series before picking this one up so you can better immerse yourself in the plotl. The pyromaniac in me, as well as the horse-lover, delights in this novel.”

But I can not stop reading it AGAIN!!!!!!!! & again & again & again & AGAIN!!!”

I cry at the end, though the effect wears off with re-reading. It's not good to read often, because the interest wears thin. Overall though, try it out. ”
