I picked up this book, having loved Skif's character from The Heralds of Valdemar Trilogy (Talia), and was eager to find out his back-story. The dialects effected were a bit much at times (impoverished people all sound Scottish in Valdemar, apparently). Also, the whole subplot when he joins the gang of thieves felt like it was snatched right out of Oliver Twist. For one of her better stand-alone novels of Valdemar, try Brightly Burning.”

If you're homophobic don't read them, this author is very open about alternative lifestyles and it can sometimes interfere with the story line. My husband liked these books, but I don't see a lot of men enjoying them. It almost (but not quite) crosses the line between fantasy and romance. I still really enjoyed them and I have to say I haven't met a romance book I've liked yet. Because of the unique approach these books read like no other fantasy book I've ever read and I give them very high marks. I actually ready most of the books written by Mercedes Lackey in about a months time I enjoyed them so much (much to my husbands dismay).”

Skif has been living under the "care" of his uncle since his mother died. One day while sneaking into a rich man's house in search of food, he meets up with Deek, a pickpocket, who introduces him to Bazie, his patron. Bazie is a disabled man who trains others to do his thieving for him. He trains Skif, and, in return, becomes like a father to him. Then tragedy strikes, and Skif is determined to get revenge. During this process, he meets up with the Herald weaponsmaster, Alberich, and also ends up being Chosen himself to become a Herald. Skif and Alberich team up to break up a slavery ring...and what a team they make!”
