Learning about magic and dragons in an ancient Egypt-like world is a refreshing change in fantasy for me. I've read all about dragons set in Lord of the Rings-like settings, but never in a high desert type place. Love it!

This is the start of a wonderful series - it's like a throwback to Lackey's earlier works, where she is trying to tell a good story rather than over-complicate things. This is a boy-meets-dragon story set in a pseudo-ancient Egypt, and all together it works, and to top it off, Lackey pulls this story off better than Paolini does.
It's a familiar story somehow, but it's really unique. I enjoyed the entire series.

It started out slow and then finally picked up after the first 100 or so pages.

You are instantly embroiled in the plight of the Main Character, Vetch, and follow him through an amazing turn of events. It's well-written and exciting.

You have to make it through this book first to explain the story, but the others are so worth the wait!

It is the story of a young boy whose family has been attacked by a conquering tribe (whose description is very much like ancient Egyptians). The family farm is taken over and he is made into a serf for the new landowner who treats him very poorly. One day, a dragon jouster, who is patrolling in the area, stops at the farm for water and witnesses the boy’s mistreatment. The jouster claims the boy for the king and takes him back to the dragon jouster compound where the boy learns about the care and handling of dragons. Adventure ensues amidst the backstory of conflict between the boy’s family tribe and the tribe of his new found friends.

It was a very easy and – for the most part - enjoyable read. I would recommend it for a YA reader who loves dragons, but I probably won’t read any more in the series.
