Didn’t Like It“For most of the book I didn't really see the point of the story. In the end you see how everything he learned helped him defeat the bad guy. I just felt like I was pushing myself to read it. The language the author used wasn't bad, the momentum and language of the story was lost on me. Just not...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“I liked the idea of the story, but this did not feel like a Lackey story. The exposition took nearly 3/4 of the book and the relationship between the firebird and Illya was tenuous at best. Not one of Lackey's better stories.”

I like faery tales written by modern writers, but Mercedes Lacky never interested me much. I'm trying to broaden my horizons on books, so I decided to read it. It has a lot of detail, so that's good, but I don't really like the writing style of the book.”

The youngest son of a minor king is terrorized by his older brothers, and realizes they plan to kill him. His kindness has won him magical friends, and he sets out on a quest to a fantastic land created by magic. The firebird is caught in this place and our hero must free her.”

The love story was a bit lacking in that I saw no evidence that he loved her, just the realization that he didn't love the other girl. I would have preferred a better love story. Still, a good plot and an unusual hero.”

A great story, an enjoyable read, and a good book.”

Excellently told, with believable, sympathetic characters and a plot that keeps you turning the pages, demanding to know what happens next. ”
