Peter Ian Digby is 39 and the Supermarket Manager at Taylors. The introduction sees him walk out in to the road and get hit by a car. A deliberate suicide attempt.
The first chapter starts one week earlier explaining why he ended up stood there. The auditors had arrived and he had a secret. Checkout 27 was his personal money box. It had been fitted in error during a refit, by directing sales to a special account he took out the money every two weeks. This had grown substantially after some shares he bought caused a large windfall. This gave him the opportunity to buy the cottage, a picturesque property in the village of Brightwell-cum-sotwell.
Everyone at work including his friends believes his small flat and an old green Peugeot are his only assets in life. His two lives are just manageable until he meets Elizabeth Healy of the audit team. At the races one evening they meet, with many things in common complications arise. She invites him to meet an old school friend who happens to live in Brightwell-cum-Sotwell. Now he needs to hide from her and keep Elizabeth in the dark, not only from his other life but work as well. He is sure the auditors are on to him even his security company will not cover up this fraud. Beaver Patrol is hand picked for incompetence. Before the meeting with the audit team he walks out in to the road.
Unfortunately he survives but instead of getting the bad news in a hospital bed his luck changes. David Phileas the strangely weak and put upon assistant manager is uncovered as the real target for the auditors. Sat in hospital his relationship with Elizabeth grows but new complications arise now explaining his cottage and money to her. During his rehabilitation the idea of a fake lottery win seems to solve it. Having explained the money he can pretend to buy the cottage he already owns finally it all appears to workout. The first day back at work arrives. Audit Manager Simon Bailey who has stayed on after the audit to help out asks one final question about PID Investments.
