Characters edit see section history

  • Mara Dyer: Protagonist. Suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder--her mother especially wants to believe this is her daughter's illness. Is dating Noah Shaw. She can and has killed people by simply wanting it. She believes she has seen Jude alive--right before she was admitted into the mental facility
  • Noah Elliot Simon Shaw: Is dating Mara. Is very rich but isn't close to his father at all. His mother died when he was a boy. Has visions of certain people (including Mara and Joseph) that are hurting/ dying, can hear people's pulse, breathing etc. and can heal other persons as well as himself.
  • Jude Lowe: Background info: Claire's brother. Was dating Mara--she tells the psychiatrist that he was attempting to assault her and then the accident happened--the building collapsed--supposedly killing him at the end of the first trilogy. But Mara believes she has seen him and is currently receiving notes/pictures from him--this sighting is one of the reasons her parents believe she is suffering from PTSD/mental illness.
  • Jamie Roth: Mara's friend at Croyden (Her new school). Is short and intelligent, having skipped a grade in high school. He is a loyal and helpful friend. Bisexual.
  • Dr. Kells: Mara's psychiatrist; the Director of Clinical Psychology at the Horizons treatment facility
  • Daniel Dyer: Mara's perfectionist older brother who often covers for her to their mother; tells Mara what the psychiatrist is telling the mother (and him)--he hopes she can get herself under "control," so she can come home
  • Dr West: psychiatrist present when Mara first wakes up in the facility; wants Mara to continue to get treatment for her possible psychotic behavior--believing her "obvious" hallucinations
  • David Shaw: business mogul; Noah's father; rumored that he has been under some federal indictments for his corporation
  • Joseph: Mara's little brother; notices that Jude is wearing Joseph's watch--led her to believe Jude took Joseph
  • Mara's maternal grandmother: (according to Mara's mother) she had a mental illness; paranoid; had hallucinations; was known for sleepwalking; continued to question Mara's mother whether or not she, too, experienced weird feelings/happenings
  • Sam Robins: admissions counselor at Horizons; is the one who greets Mara and parent when she first enters Horizons; and is there when she is admitted to the residential treatment facility

  • Madame Rose: Fortune teller at the carnival; she read Mara's future--told her that she must let Noah go or he would die before his time; she gave Mara her money back so Mara knows that the fortune teller is telling the truth
  • Miranda: fortune teller's daughter
