- Rye: Youngest brother and main character, lies about his age to go on the quest to save Weld
- Weld: Walled city where Rye and his family live.
- Lisbeth: A beekeeper and mother to all three brothers. She tends a bell tree and makes preserves from the fruit.
- Dirk: Oldest brother who works on reinforcing the Wall of Weld, against the Warden's government, volunteers for the quest to save Weld
- Sholto: middle brother, He works as a healer apprentice to Master Tallus, volunteers for the quest to save Weld
- Skimmers: Serpents who attack Weld, attracted to movement, light, heat, smell and sound. Repelled by a potion made by Sholto and Tallus.
- Sonia: A girl, dressed as a Keep orphan, who tags along with Rye to solve the quest regarding the origins of the skimmers.
- Kirwan: Fellan Man, tallest of the men who met with Rye and Sonia
- Edelle: A Fellan woman who gave Rye a small bag of gifts
- Olt: Chieftan of Oltan, a powerful and ancient sorcerer
- Oltan: Name of the village Olt rules
- Fleet: Village outside Oltan. Known for rasing horses
- Fitzfee: Little person who sells goat dairy products, saves Rye from a bloodhog with a crossbow, gives Rye and Sonia a ride to Fleet
- Nanion: Friend of Fitzfee who provides shelter to Rye and Sonia while they are in Fleet
- Faene D'Or: Beautiful young lady who befriends Rye and Sonia, loves Dirk
- Bern: Head Gifter under Olt
- Hass: Burly man from the Flying Fish tavern who helps Rye while in Olt
Setting & Locations edit
- Weld: walled city where Rye and his family lives, attacked by skimmers, ruled by the Warden
- Fell Zone: thought to be a "No Man's Land" outside the Wall of Weld, filled with monsters, Fellan people reside here
- Fleet: City known for its fast horses, Nanion and his family live here
- Olt: City ruled by Oltan the sorcerer, guarded by the Gifters, where the Midsummer's Eve ceremony is to take place
