  • Rye: Youngest brother and main character, lies about his age to go on the quest to save Weld
  • Weld: Walled city where Rye and his family live.
  • Lisbeth: A beekeeper and mother to all three brothers. She tends a bell tree and makes preserves from the fruit.
  • Dirk: Oldest brother who works on reinforcing the Wall of Weld, against the Warden's government, volunteers for the quest to save Weld
  • Sholto: middle brother, He works as a healer apprentice to Master Tallus, volunteers for the quest to save Weld
