  • Wren MacAvoy: Main character who wishes to get out of the underground dome she lives in. She is a shiner who lives below in the tunnels. Her father is unknown, and her mother dies giving birth to her
  • Pace Bratton: A 'bluecoat' He has blue eyes and dark hair. Asks Wren for help.
  • Alex: A friend of Wren who hopes to find a way out of the dome. He is burnt when he tries to leave the dome. His last words are 'the sky is blue'
  • Peggy: Wren's best friend, sister of James and betrothed to Adam .
  • James: Peggy's brother. Charming with green eyes. Wants to be Wren's partner.
  • Lucy: A friend of Wren's who was betrothed to Alex, but thought that he wasn't enough for her. She works above ground.
