• Pryana: Girl from Cypress who befriends Adelice but with ambitions that know no bounds.
• Benn: Adelice's and Amie's father.

• Loricel: The Creweler.
• Rozenn: Daughter of a fisherman in an isolated and relatively unimportant village.
• Amie Lewys: Adelice's younger sister. She admires the Spinsters and is bright and bubbly.

• Beth: Adelice's neighbor. When they were kids, she bullied Amie and was taken away for a time. She was never the same afterward.

• Magdalena: Wife of an official at a ball. She can't believe Adelice eats some steak. The other women are eating chicken only. She drops some clues about future plans for society.
• Mrs. Swander: Amie's teacher who had "an accident" which alarms Adelice's parents because accidents are unheard of.
• Enora: Adelice's mentor
• Minister Carma: Functions as something like a Prime Minister of Arras; Cormac Patton wants to replace him.
• Dr. Ellysen: Performs remapping
• Meria: Adelice's mother, a secretary
