- Luca Vero: A novice monk, sent out by the Church as an Inquirer into strange goings on
- Freize: Luca's servant, works at the monastery as a kitchen servant, but always looking out for Luca as well. Level headed and intelligent. He looks up to Luca, calls him Little Lord.
- Ishraq: Lady Isolde's Muslim friend and servant. Struggles to be accepted into the medieval Christian society, but tends to be right overall
- Isolde: The main female character in the story. Joined the abbey as Lady Abbess on the death of her father. She was supposed to inherit her father's lands and become Lady Lucretili, but on his deathbed, his father willed the lands to her brother and willed her to live in the abbey.
- Giorgio Lucretili: Isolde's brother, and now Lord Lucretili. He inherited the lands and title from his recently deceased father.
- Prince Roberto: The prince that Isolde's brother Giorgio tried to marry her to. He is pompous and disgusting.
