Evie O'Neill: Main character. She has the ablity to see a few details of a person's life by holding an object that they own. More than anything, she wants to be famous. She's a witty, excitable, vain, and lovable flapper. She loves a good time (with liquor of course.) She's also very persistent when she wants something.

He had supernatural healing powers, but they stopped working after his mother died. He loves writing poetry and often seeks solace in an old African graveyard. He works in the meuseum with Evie, and develops strong feelings for her. He's kind of a player and a troublemaker, and Evie does not want to be romantically involved with him.
Octavia: Memphis and Isaiah's aunt. Extremely uptight and religiously devoted.
Dottie: Evies' friend who lives in Zenith, Ohio. Not important in the grand scheme of the novel.

“I thought research would be more glamorous, somehow. I'd give the librarian a secret code word and he'd give me the one book I needed and whisper the necessary page numbers. Like a speakeasy. With books”
“There is a hideous invention called the Dewey Decimal System. And you have to look up your topic in books and newspapers. Pages upon pages upon pages…”
