  • I really fell in love with this book. And the movie isn't that bad either.

I love the characters of this book. I still cant picture out Beautiful Rosa having green hair. Do you? Of course, I love Clara the clairvoyant, she has something in common with my mom and dad as Esteban Trueba. Of course, Alba is on of the best characters in the book. She brings love and joy, to the Trueba' family.

Are you into mysticism? What's the book about?

Hi! Promise, you don't have to be mystique to enjoy this one. It doesn't have dragons of magical novels but it has that aura of surrealism set in the real-life battles of one family in a forsaken country. When you're a visionary but you're tired of reading manifestos-- this is the one for you.

when i read this book, it reflected some of the things we do in the house when my granfmother was still alive...it is funny and well woven sub plots really make me identify with the incidents and the characters...the story itself touched a "childhood buton" in me.

It created an affinity among the readers. Yes, the rural setting and values transcends through the boundaries of geography. Maybe that's the power of the Third World consciousness. (I don't want to be political on this one).

for one, this is allende's version of steven javellana's 'without seeing the dawn'. I love how symbolism worked in the entire read. After reading, Iit left me thinking on the reality of the surreal images which held us captivated. The reader would be left with the notion to either believe in the 'spirits' or believe in the 'real spirits'-- pangs of political struggle, the quest for the ideal. It leaves us with the thought of the macrocosmic problem and torments us with the eccentricities of our own personal struggles. It's a very lovely book. Until this time, my emotions are attached to it. The characters are round, I must say. They seem like your neighbors.

This is a great book, but a difficult subject -- troubling but also inspiring. It would be easy to dismiss the worst of the tragedies with the lightheartedness of the spirit world, but these things really happened, that's the hard part. Yet the author puts an uplifting turn to it, an appreciation for the fullness of living, the good with the bad, the magical with the mundane. All in all it's a book about carrying on, but I wouldn't recommend it to the faint of heart.

I liked reading about Esteban cleaning up that ranch, how hard he worked and how shrewd he was despite his emotional pain. The wimmin were all magickal, ol' Esteban didn't stand a chance, did he?

This book is absolutely incredible and regardless of the movie, should be read in its own right. It is a beautiful and enduring story of love, loss, magic, life, death, truth, and beauty.

It is one of my top reads of all time.

How was Trueba treating people when he was elected for senator?

If Clara was still alive would you think she'll be happy to see Esteban as Senator?

What is Alba's role in the story?

How are the roles of men and women in this book different? What are common strengths and weaknesses of each gender?
