This was the first of Allende's novels that I read, and my introduction to magical realism. Although it's been at least 20 years since I read this, I still remember the strength and complexity of the main character and of all the relationships desribed within. She's just a great writer, especially about women.

I think that I didn't enjoy this book because I read it between working on two college degrees and running a public library during a painful growth period. I was also not into magical realism at the time. I also don't think that I felt connected enough to the history of Chile to truly appreciate the book. Everyone was raving about it at the time and I felt badly that I just didn't get it. I think I need to reread this at some point.

when i read this book, it reflected some of the things we do in the house when my granfmother was still alive...it is funny and well woven sub plots really make me identify with the incidents and the characters...the story itself touched a "childhood buton" in me.
