  This historical epic, written in the style of magical realism emblematic of Latin America by acclaimed author Isabel Allende, documents three generations of the turbulent ups and downs of the Trueba family of Chile. The characters include Esteban, the patriarch who is at turns cruel and vulnerable; his wife Clara, who routinely communicates with spirits; their children Blanca, Jaime and Nicolas and their grandchild Alba. The backdrop is mid 1900s Chile, which experiences political and social turmoil and upheaval throughout the story. The complex web of relationships in the Trueba family is revealed in exquisite detail, and by the end of the novel the author has encompassed themes of love and heartbreak, revenge and forgiveness, jealousy and apathy, and pain and healing in a true classic.
