Hedge is a typical human--fat and bald, not pretty but not ugly, with a round, doting wife, and a farm where he tends beehives. Except Hedge is not a typical human. In fact, Hedge is not human at all, but a plant sent by the Council of Plants and the Plant of Ultimate Knowing to observe... read more

Characters/People edit see section history

  • Hedge: A plant-spy who has been observing humanity for 20 years under orders from the Council of Plants and the Plant of Ultimate Knowing. He lives on a farm with Anna, his wife, a woman whose memories have been replaced to fit the narrative of their relationship. Hedge is a lazy spy, preferring to reflect on his relationships with the people around him, and enjoy his time doing menial chores. His relaxed lifestyle takes an abrupt turn when he is recalled by the Council of Plants.
  • Mr. Visitor: An extraterrestrial of unknown origin. His species is noteworthy as their appearance often precludes the destruction of the dominant species on the planet they are visiting.
  • The Plant of Ultimate Knowing: A legendary plant that reputedly knows everything and shapes the decisions of the Council of Plants, which in turn decides which species in the Universe, based on the threat they pose to other species, are permitted to continue.
  • Anna: Human wife of Hedge. An uncomplicated woman who is fascinated with Hedge's detached curiosity with the world around him. Her memories of an abusive childhood were erased and replaced for the purposes of serving as Hedge's wife, though she genuinely loves him and enjoys his attention.

Quotes edit see section history

  • “Most distinguishable about the idiot, Hedge noted, was their fear of that which was different. Those who feared difference always made a point of finding difference in others in order to feel more secure in their sameness.””
  • “For all their simplicity, humans could be remarkably perceptive, though they didn't know it most of the time, and their ability to thrust straight through deception and see to the heart of truth was often lost with childhood. By adulthood humans had trained themselves to be coy and manipulative in response to the coy and manipulative society in which they lived, which led them to believe that everyone was trying to be as coy and manipulative as themselves and were uncertain about what was true and what was not. Beyond their few flashes of clarity, everything became a muddle of colliding doubts.”

Setting & Locations edit see section history

Planet Plant
  • The Chamber of the Plant of Ultimate Knowing: A domed garden area in a vast garden tended by plant-like acolytes that seem to lack any form of sensory devices or conventional means of communication. It is here where the legendary Plant of Ultimate Knowing resides, and where Hedge goes for counsel regarding the Council of Plants' decision.
  • Council Chamber: A large chamber in which plant council members are arranged in ascending tiers along the perimeter. Senior plants are given a place on the bottom tier, where the council addresses returning agents. Agents stand in the center of the chamber, where they are visible to all in attendance.
  • Storage Facility: A facility on planet Plant where vials that contain entire species are stored. Such is the volume of species stored in the Storage Facility, that being stored is essentially a consignment to oblivion.
