“Though the romance novel is a genre that can be extremely pleasurable, it is common for love stories to become repetitive--carbon copies of each other, the same structure, format, and archetypes. As Esquivel's work is a romance of unconventional design, Like Water for Chocolate is particularly noteworthy. A delicious affair between soul mates is woven within a calendar design and embellished with the tenets of culture and location. Recipes compliment the story, adding depth the Esquivel's work and providing the originality lacking in the drug store romance books. The characters are rich, the plot is vibrant...the tale is brought to life by the author's masterful language and clever composition. I would definitely recommend the work to any avid reader, even one who usually doesn't enjoy the love story kind of novel. It is a book worth reading for so many factors, an magnificent account of family feuding, personal sacrifice, and the difficulties faced by forbidden love.”

“I just want to post this because I'm quite proud of this paper when the rest of my classmates discussed about the romance in the novel. I had to retype this because I only have the original hard copy which I submitted to my professor. This post is slightly altered from the original paper to include my teacher's comments and corrections. Unfortunately, I forgot her name but Ma'am MZM(S?or L?) thank you for your interest in my paper and for the grade. ;)http://witnessstatement.blogspot.com/2007/10/women-of-like-water-for-chocolate.html”
“Have you been bombarded by complete strangers who wanted to know, after you have written a review, and/or made comments expressing your opinion of a book, whether they should read this book? And it isn't that they took the time to see who you are, then ask in a note, no, they just spammed you and everyone else on Shelfari who has said book on shelf. Does this irriate you? If so, you can do something about it: you can contact either of the two Shelfari reps below, or better yet, you can contact both of them and ask them to please remove the new and annoying feature that allows this spamming!http://www.shelfari.com/amandahttp://www.shelfari.com/timothygray”

“This book isn’t difficult to read it’s just some of the things the author in the book says that might confuse you; she uses plenty of figurative language in the book. Like Water for Chocolate is about a Latino girl named Tita; she is the youngest in her family and can’t marry the man she loves, Pedro. It’s a family tradition that the youngest in the family has to take care of their mother. Instead of Tita marring Pedro her sister Rosaura does. This book it centered around cooking; for each chapter there is a different recipe for foods. This book is pretty much a big family soap opera it’s very entertaining and fun. ”
“Blew me over!...esp the chatty very feminine style with the intensities broken at the right points by recipes that become much much more than just recipes!”
“Its romantic and sensual, a tall tale and yet believable - it draws the reader in because of the vivid imagery and the words dripping with passion and magic. A truly BEAUTIFUL novel this is. my favorite book of all time.”
“Love the movie "Como Agua Para Chocolate". The book must be equally good.”
“I've never looked a cooking quite the same after reading this book. Even though the movie wasn't as good I still enjoyed it.”
