In September of 1949, when Amanda Hensley is nine months old, her RAF pilot father dies in a mid-air collision. Haunted by this, she grows up trying to protect herself from further loss. Eighteen years later, as the September monsoon drenches the Indian city of Agra, Rani Sharma is born. She is lucky enough to have a father who swears to dedicate his life to caring for her.
Amanda’s stepfather’s job transports her family to South Australia where she yearns to escape a narrow-minded expatriate community determined to recreate England amidst the red dust and gum trees of their adopted country. Her fear of loss makes her doubt her first love and she flees Australia before he can break her heart. While visiting a friend in Los Angeles, she impulsively falls for a charismatic, but alcoholic, older man and becomes pregnant. The following September, devastated by the loss of her prematurely-born daughter, Amanda begins to fear the month that will continue to change her life.
Just as Amanda is leaving Australia, Rani’s family arrives, only to find they must cope with prejudice and the rejection of her father’s medical credentials.. Determined to fulfill her father’s dream, Rani becomes a doctor, sacrificing her personal life to take care of others until heartbreak propels her to New York City.
By the time their paths intersect in Manhattan, Amanda has learned that the fateful month of September can hold both joy and grief, and Rani is on the brink of finding real happiness. A strong bond forms between them and Amanda prepares to celebrate the September engagement of the young woman who has taken the place of her daughter. But her hard-won ability to accept that loss is an inevitable part of life will be put to the ultimate test when Rani goes missing on 9/11.
