A young adult quick reading biography of brothers Frank and Luther North and their Pawnee Scouts who worked with the U.S. Army to protect and rescue overland trail travelers, settlers, soldiers, and union Pacific Railroad workers across the Great Plains during the Plains Indian Wars of the 1860s and 1870s and during the building of the Transcontinental Railroad. Two of those Pawnee Scouts "shared" the first Congressional Medal of Honor ever given to a Native American.

In 1856, when they were sixteen- and ten-years old, brothers Frank and Luther North traveled by railroad, stagecoach, and wagon to the newly opened wilderness of Nebraska Territory. There they not only learned to survive in the Plains wilderness, but to thrive in it.

  • gandy dancers: the men workers who put down the tracks for the building of the railroad lines in the 1860s, particularly on the Union Pacific (Transcontinental Railroad) line
  • Loup: A French word meaning "wolf" as used by the 1700s/1800s French fur traders who often traded with and sometimes lived with the Skidi (or Loup or Wolf) band of the Pawnee Indians near the Loup (or Wolf) River in Nebraska.
  • Skidi Pawnee: The Wolf or Loup band of the Pawnee who often lived on the Loup River in Nebraska until the mid-1870s.
