    Was it the inspiration?

I heard a movie was going to come out based on his stories but I could be wrong.

This was published long before "Elf" came out.

Was the movie 'Elf' starring Will Farrell made before or after this story was published? Good movie. I thought the first story was the most memorable and funny but the rest were kind of dark and sad.

I also really enjoyed reading "holidays on ice." The maceys elf one has me in hysterics every time I read it. I was lucky enough to see it performed as a one man play. Priceless.

My favorite essay by Sedaris is located in this little book. It's his classic story about being an Elf at Macys. My husband and I read it separately and had to read our favorite parts aloud to each other in fits of giggles. He claims to have shot milk out his nose while reading it over breakfast. The other essays are good, some much better than others, often very dark, but a wide variety in style. He shows a huge range in here. A nice satiric take on the holidays, cutting to the heart of our consumer driven focus. It makes you want to strip it all away and get back to Jesus, not exactly the message he probably wanted to give, but that's what happens when you're cynical. You need to look for the alternatives, and in this case, the alternative is Jesus, stripped of the frivolities and holiday insanity.

I read this book, or I should say, I listened to this book, last Christmas. This is my introduction to Sedaris, and I loved hearing his voice telling the stories. My favorite is the one where he is one of Santa'a elves at Macy's. I laughed and laughed. They should make a movie out of this book.
