funny, i found it spot on. yes it is edgy in places, but growing up straight in the deep south, i found life to be a bit strange. i can only imagine life as a southern gay male in a traditional family, you see a pretty freaky world.

Look, if you don't know what satire, irony, sarcasm is, or it is not your cup of tea, keep on browsing. Sedaris' family is at once hilarious and chaotic, and sometimes very sad. Somehow, at least David and Amy seem to have come out intact. They use their siblings, indeed themselves endlessly in their stories. If you come from the South as I do, you know we put our foibles in the parlor window for all to see, so I guess I immediately got his humor. It's a very dark humor, but all humor has an element of tragedy or irony. This is a great beach or airlined read! His audiobooks are even better.

All the David Sedaris books I have "read", I have listened to on tape. His humor is so dry that I think I may have missed some had I been reading instead of listening. I totally did not see this as good "clean" fun, but it was hilarious.

I saw an audio tape collection of Sedaris today at Books-A-Million. I told my husband to get it for me for Christmas. I've been reading his stuff for about 10 years, but I've never heard him on NPR. This one is one of my favorites b/c I think it is his most personal. You really get a feel for his family, and I absolutely love hearing about his youngest brother "The Rooster" and the way he interacts with their father. The whole book makes you laugh until you cry, but it also makes you understand why Sedaris uses humor to cope with life, if that makes sense? Anyway, it's a must read if you like to laugh!

hard to believe a silly little gay guy from the deep south could make me laugh so hard. Sedaris is up there with Bryson as a comic genius!
