Tredan Vendbebelot, a former Enchanter turned magical curios vendor, for the past ten years has been under the Church’s secret compulsion spell to write a book with magic to enslave the Enchanters. The book is now done, and a Church Enforcer has come to collect it.

Tredan’s wife Lanith and their dragonette Arnl’jhott have just left for their monthly visit to the orphanage, and Tredan is alone. It is the day their magical curio shop is normally closed. Deciding against puttering in his rooftop garden, Tredan unpacks delivery boxes that arrived the afternoon before.

A Compulsion charm hides among the other benign magical items. Tredan picks it up and is ensnared. This is a disaster. Only a Church magician, an Enforcer, would use a charm that calls to his long-unused Enchanter magic. Tredan’s time has run out. He tries to break the charm’s spells and cannot. Tredan has hidden his journal so when the Enforcer does come visiting, it won’t be easy pickings. One task remains, and that is to warn Lanith.

Tredan goes to the shop’s workroom, sets the wards, and summons the ghost Sumer. He asks the ghost to warn Lanith. Sumer asks if she has the magical talent to see and converse with ghosts. Lanith does not. Tredan dismisses the ghost and despairs. Tredan puts away the delivery charms and goes to his rooftop garden. The Compulsion charm has strong magic and he cannot get rid of it. The Enforcer will visit him soon.

The Protection charms downstairs in the "Tredan’s Magical Curios" shop fall to the arriving Enforcer’s power. The Enforcer gets inside. He finds Tredan on the rooftop. They have a magical battle in the garden, then Tredan frees downstairs.

The Enforcer has blocked all of the exits with magic; there is no escape. They fight again and magical curios shatter. The Church magician uses fire to subdue Tredan’s magic. The Enforcer rips away Tredan’s protection charms, which makes the wounds bleed away his magical power. The Enforcer subdues Tredan, and he drops the Compulsion charm; its work is done. His shop and home are in flames.

Tredan vows to deny the Church’s Wrath to the end. His magic journal is hidden elsewhere. The whole building now burns. The Enforcer fetches an accomplice and they drag the injured Tredan from the building. They toss him in the back of a horse cart and drive away. The Enforcer bespells Tredan. Darkness consumes him, and he passes out.

  • Compulsion Spell or Charm: A Compulsion Spell will force the recipient to take action, refrain from performing a specified action, or reveal secrets against his/her will.
  • Dragonette: A dragonette is a miniature, five pound dragon; typically 4’ long with wing span almost 5’ wide.
  • Enchanters: An Enchanter is a special type of senior Magic Worker. Enchanters literally produce magical essence which is then dispersed by the Magic Guild to other Guilds and to the Church. To produce this magic, Enchanters eat a mixture of bark, sap, and leaves from magic-heavy trees in the Old Forest that resemble sticks of hard candy.
  • Enforcers: An Enforcer is a man who is appointed by His Divine to seek out and eradicate “dirty” magic, so to remove temptation from Church members. Enforcers also seek out Enchanters, capture their magical essence, and release it into the Church's magical coffers. These attacks are the biggest source of strife between the Schools and the Church.

Themes & Symbolism edit see section history

  • Magic Book: Tredan's magical book (journal) represents divine secrets, a type of Pandora's Box or Eve's apple in Eden, containing knowledge that persons seeking power want to use for their own means. The Enchanters have worked for centuries to cultivate the difficult disciplines that will create and consolidate magical essence (power). They have also cultivated the restraints, and developed weaknesses, along the way. The Enforcer, and His Divine, want a shortcut, and seek Tredan's journal ("Tredan's Bane") to get an unlimited source of magical power.
