- Stephanie Plum: Bounty Hunter working for Vinnie Plum and heroine of the novels. Not the greatest in the world, admits that a lot of her captures are more due to luck than anything else. Lives with her hamster Rex. Has an on again off again relationship with Joe Morelli. Describes herself as being 5'7, having blue eyes and curly brown hair. Is infamous for destroying cars, and not always her car either. Described as the Bounty Hunter from Hell by cops.
- Joe Morelli: Trenton PD vice cop and Stephanie's on again off again boyfriend. Has a Ducati and later on a big orange dog named Bob. Described as being 6 feet of hard lean Italian muscle with dark hair and dark eyes and in the words of Stephanie "Yum". Would like to marry Stephanie, on the provision that she quit being a bounty hunter. Calls Stephanie Cupcake.
- Ranger: Bounty Hunter who works for Vinnie, and also owner of his own security consulting firm in later novels. And also later a romantic interest for Stephanie. Formerly Special Forces. Two months older than Stephanie and described as being 6 feet or a few inches under or over. Cuban American with skin the color of a mocha latte, dark hair and dark eyes, always dresses in black, very muscular with no extra fat on him and also Yum. Say he loves Stephanie in his own way. Always drives very expensive black cars. Full name is Ricardo Carlos Manoso. Got the nickname Ranger in Special Forces. Calls Stephanie Babe.
- Vincent "Vinnie" Plum: Owner of Vincent Plum Bail Bonds. Stephanie more or less black mails him into giving her a job. He's Stephanie cousin. Said to have had a romantic relationship with a duck at one time. Described as looking like a weasel.
- Lula: File clerk for Vinnie Plum, though how much filing she does is pretty debatable. Used to be a Hooker and still dresses like it. Is described as being short, plus size with a propensity for spandex. Has a talent for jamming her size sixteen body into size ten clothes. Changes her hair color on a regular basis.
- Grandma Mazur: Spunky grandmother of Stephanie. Lives with Stephanie's parents in the burg. Drives her son-in-law crazy
- Joyce Barnhardt: Stephanie's arch enemy and fellow bounty hunter. Long history of bad karma between them. Joyce was caught with Stephanie's husband -spread eagle on the kitchen table- while the ink was still drying on their wedding certificate.

- Dougie Kruper: Stephanie's friend and old classmate.
- Valerie: Stephanie's sister. Always the "good sister" until she suddenly arrives from California with her girls to stay with her parents. Her husband left her and ran off with the babysitter leaving Valerie homeless and destitute. The Plum house is now full to overload. Stephanie's mom is pushed to the breaking point.
- Mary Maggie Mason: Mud wrestler and avid reader. Currently wrestles at the Snake Pit but would like to own a mystery bookstore.
- Bob: Stephanie's dog. He likes to eat anything that isn't nailed down.
- Eddie Dechooch: FTA that Stephanie is after
- Ziggy Garvey: Friend of Eddie DeCooch
- Mooner: Friend of Stephanie's. Enjoys getting stoned and collecting random memorbilia
- Benny Colucci: Friend of Eddie DeCooch
- Connie Rosolli: Works (really runs) at bail bond office. Some connections with the mob. Prototype Jersey girl; big hair, big boobs, long red nails, short skirts and tight tops. Very savvy. Like most of Trenton, she carries a gun.
- Ronald Dechooch: Eddie's son
- Melvin Baylor: A FTA that Stephanie is trying to bring in.
- Evelyn Soder: Add a description of this character.
- Mabel
- Loretta Ricci: Found dead in the shed of Eddie DeCouch, FTA. Loretta died of a heart attack and after she was dead someone shot here. Strange series of events?
- Sophia DeStefano: Religious, insane, and murders people. Wife of a gangster.
- Angela Marguchi
- Mary Alice: Stephanie's niece. Thinks she is a horse. Now lives with Stephanie's parents.
- Choochy: The FTA of the whole book. He can hardly see, doesn't hear well, has prostate problems, and has to pee every 15 minutes. Yet Stephanie, Lula, Vinnie and Ranger are unable to get their hands on the wily old guy. As a coup de gras, he kidnaps Grandma Mazur.
