Since then, her only real companion has been the strong hearted, and sometimes fierce, Rosaleen, who acts as her "stand-in mother. "When Rosaleen insults three of the deepest racists in town, Lily knows it's time to go. They take off toward Tiburon, South Carolina--a name she found on the back of a picture among the few possessions left by her mother. There they are taken in by a trio of black beekeeping sisters named May, June, and August. Lily calls them the calendar sisters and enters their amazing secret world of bees and honey, and of the Black Madonna who presides over the household of strong, wise women.”

Lily runs away from her abusive father and on the run with her nanny Rosaleen to Tiburon, South Carolina in order to find out more of her mother who died when she was 4. Monk combines so many elements of life, love, racism, depression, God, etc into her 300 page story. The words are poignant and beautiful and was a treat to read.
I also watched the movie and was pleasantly surprised how close to the novel they remained. It was a great one too.”
