Mica Area High School was a normal everyday school in Mica, Arizona until Stargirl Caraway shows up. The town could be considered “overlooked” by the big cities in the state until Stargirl gives it a twist. No student knows exactly what she is. A real student, an actress, placed by the administration… but what ever she is changes the town. In the beginning people are afraid of her, to talk to her, but as time goes on those people get curious and venture out of their comfort zone. Nearing the middle of the story she is asked to join the cheerleading squad. She goes from sitting by herself at lunch to having people crowd the table just to be near her. When she starts to cheer for the other teams though things start to go wrong. Stargirl doesn’t believe in sticking to one cluster so she cheers for anyone and everyone. The other students start to think that maybe Stargirl thinks something is wrong with them, that’s why she must act and dress so differently, so they gang up on her with the silent treatment. Her high popularity starts to sink, and fast, but she doesn’t seem to notice. Maybe it was the girl or maybe it was the boy, but while the shunning by the other students take place a big crush begins. Leo was no one special in popularity terms but Stargirl went by her own rules. While no one else would talk to her Stargirl Caraway and Leo Borlock “fall in love”. In the middle of the story Leo tries to reinvent her into something she’s not, normal. He has much to teach her but doesn’t give up. This results in making matters worse so Stargirl gives up being Susan the normal teenager, and goes back to her original self. Stargirl reverses what Leo tried to do and teaches him her ways of life… enchanted places, marbles of happiness, sending unsigned cards to people in need, and so much more. She has only one enemy who she learns to deal with and who causes her to vanish at the end of the book. At the Ocotillo Ball, a school dance, Hillari Kimble exclaims that “she ruins everything”, and slaps her. Stargirl replied by gently kissing her on the check, quietly leaving, and that was the last time Stargirl was ever seen.
