- Jurgis Rudkus: Protagonist. Lithuanian farm boy. He is strong, honest but also naive and illiterate.
- Ona Lukoszaite: Jurgis's fiance and later his wife. She followed him to America from Lithuania.
- Marija Berczynskas: Ona's cousin, who came to America with the family. She works at the packing plant.
- Teta Elzbieta Lukoszaite: Ona's stepmother and the mother of seven children
- Jonas Lukoszas: Elzbieta's brother and Ona's uncle, who comes with the family to America.
- Antanas Rudkus: The son of Jurgis and Ona.
- Dede Antanas Rudkus: Jurgis's father who accompanies him to America.
