Ged, a young male child born in the poor village of Gont, shows inborn skills of wizardry, so he is sent to apprentice with one. Like most teens, he feels somewhat rebellious and questions many of the things taught him. One day, another of the wizard students taunts him, and he breaks the rules regarding the uses of wizardry. He unleashes a dark force and must spend the rest of the novel pursing this darkness and making amends for his youthful mistake.
