Ayla, a tall blonde five year old, is separated from her people in an earthquake. She nearly dies, but is rescued by the medicine woman (Iza) from a Neanderthal clan. She is taken in and raised as a member of the clan, but ultimately her innate differences create difficulties within the clan. Some recognize her potential but others see her as an insolent female. Told with beautiful detail, this story explores Ayla's journey to womanhood and captures the survivalist nature of the clan and their actions.
