Diversity Works 499 books / 771 members / 7574 posts "Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. Hate destroys a man's sense of values and his objectivity. It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true."

~ Martin Luther King Jr

Diversity Works is a where we acknowledge our differences, celebrate our commonalities, and make an honest effort to navigate between the two. We hope the setting here feels safe enough for you to examine, consider, and challenge ideas and thoughts expressed here. It's not about being right, but being heard.

Prehistoric Books 23 books / 11 members / 10 posts Big beasts rule! This group is about fiction that deals with prehistoric or primitive themes. These include dinosaurs, prehistoric mammals, large animals, strange plants, exotic landscapes, and primitive cultures. Such stories would often take place in the past, but they could also take place in the future or on another planet where prehistoric animals or stone age people live. This category may be considered part of speculative ficiton in general, but more specifically part of science fiction. We can also discuss nonfiction books (science, academic, or documentary) that cover prehistoric topics. Folklore, mythology, and cryptozoology can be included, too. So, rev up your imagination and join in the fun!

A series of unfortunate choices 24 books / 47 members / 125 posts Okay, so what's your biggest, latest disappointment with a book that looked or sounded great, or with a book suggested by someone who you really really respect that turned out to be a dog, or maybe just your favorite bad book of all time....?

My latest letdown was "Special Topics in Calamity Physics," which was way too clever in an exhausting way, but which my friend Sue forced me to buy. Still, it paid off in that now there are people at work who after seeing me with the book think I enjoy particle physics as a hobby. So there's that.

And my favorite bad book of all time is "The Thorn Birds." 'Nuff said.

Crystal Dolphin's Fiction Listing for everything else 54 books / 1 members / 0 posts My General Fiction Reading list. This list does not include children's or young adult books, science fiction/fantasy or non-fiction books.
Historical Fiction 535 books / 527 members / 749 posts I was shocked there was no "historical fiction" group so I'm going to try this.

Your books can be from any era and style as long as they are historical fiction! I am always on the lookout for new books so please add/suggest as many as you like! As you can see from my shelf and the group's shelf we have a loose interpretation of what is "historical fiction" and a varied taste in books.
Authors are welcome to post, but please do not use this group to advertise for your book unless it caters to our interests!
Another small request from me......Please keep all discussions civil and try to respect other people's views and opinions while posting on this group.
If you decide to join...welcome!
Five Senses Eco-Survival 85 books / 21 members / 87 posts About ... survival skills, bushcraft, early technology, independence and quality of life issues like happiness, lifestyle, non-consumerism and environmental protection ... mostly factual and self-teaching but some of the best education comes from the best fiction :)
Adaptations 64 books / 58 members / 20 posts So... maybe the dialogue was fine, and the music was great, but the setting was pathetic - and the actor who played your favourite character probably never bothered to read the book!!...

What do YOU think of adaptations?

What books do you think should be made into films? And what do you think of ones that have been? Hate them? Love them? Want to lynch the director?... or marry the actor?

Open discussion on anything to do with adaptations! Feel free to join.
50 Book Challenge! 2775 books / 2663 members / 14987 posts When asked about the new Amazon Kindle product, Steve Jobs CEO of Apple computer had this to say:

“It doesn’t matter how good or bad the product is, the fact is that people don’t read anymore,” he said. “Forty percent of the people in the U.S. read one book or less last year. The whole conception is flawed at the top because people don’t read anymore.”

Welcome to the the 50 Book Challenge, where we fly in the face of Steve Jobs.

Basically .... the challenge is to read 50 books in one year. OR ... establish a goal for yourself more or less, it's up to you, just because we say 50 books doesn't mean that has to be your goal too.

Start a thread, WITH YOUR NAME IN THE SUBJECT OF YOUR ORIGINAL POST, and log your books. It is a very good idea to bookmark (when in your post, add it to your internet browser's favorites) your post for easy location for future updates. Things move quickly around here.

If you haven't been keeping track of the books you've read, start when you join.

Thanks for being here and have fun. If you have any suggestions or questions, feel free to contact me.
