When her parents are killed by an earthquake, 5-year-old Ayla wanders through the forest completely alone. Cold, hungry, and badly injured by a cave lion, the little girl is as good as gone until she is discovered by a group who call themselves the Clan of the Cave Bear. This clan, left homeless by the same disaster, have little interest in the helpless girl who comes from the tribe they refer to as the "Others." Only their medicine woman sees in Ayla a fellow human, worthy of care. She painstakingly nurses her back to health--a decision that will forever alter the physical and emotional structure of the clan. Although this story takes place roughly 35,000 years ago, its cast of characters could easily slide into any modern tale. The members of the Neanderthal clan, ruled by traditions and taboos, find themselves challenged by this outsider, who represents the physically modern Cro-Magnons. And as Ayla begins to grow and mature, her natural tendencies emerge, putting her in the... see complete book description

Okay it took me a little bit to get through this book but I finally did it. I finished the book last night and much to my surprise I found myself very sad for Ayla. Her life ended just where it had began with an earth quake and the loss of her family. I personally think the Clan should have denounced Broud and cursed him instead. But what do I know I am just a reader.

It was slow starting as well as different parts of the book but over all I liked it. I too will be reading the rest of the series.

that's crazy! I'm a fantasy reader as well. My Dad recommended the book to me. I felt the beginning was a bit slow, but man when she get's herself into trouble! The book is amazing! I just kept thinking WHAT HAPPENS, HOW DOES SHE GET OUT OF THIS!
I don't plan to read the rest of the series either, though my Dad said he didn't like the 2nd.

I SO recommend the rest of the series. The author does tend to draw things out simply because she put so much research into it and I think she feels the need to prove it. The first book is pretty slow because the pace of life with the Clan is pretty slow, but the rest of the series is wonderful and I think it would be an injustice not to finish it! Just a thought...

A talented story as a tasty saga from Jean M. Auel. We are able to get around the world and see how life was survived in ancient times at least in our imaginary world.

I agree, this book was the best of the series, and I too found myself transported in time.

I have read the first three novels many more times than that, however, I have only read Plains of Passage once also Shelters of Stone, both very disappointing especially the latter which we all had to wait 12 years for before written and published and believe me, 12 yrs wait for something so rubbishy by comparison to the first three books makes me feel I have wasted all that time. I found the first three books different and engaaging. I got lost in book four, but to give it some due, I only read it once. having had to wait 12 years for book five, the completion of the earth's children series(sorry about capitols, crappy keyboard), i found it EXTREMEL;Y repetetive in a bad way, and the long awaited visit with the western people poorly documented. after such a fine beginning, i was DISAAPPOINTED to say the least, evelyn

The first one is the best. She does become more repetitious as she progresses in the series. Pages and pages of discription on how to snap flint!
