She does regret that her entire life could be minimized into one word: coding. Between assignments, she waited for Brian, the CEO of Elite Software to transfer her to a new client. Brian assigns her to her dream job at Helitronics, the largest DoD contractor for helicopter aviation electronics.
Then Kyle Jacobs reenters her life and turns everything upside down. Niki has to learn to work with him since he also is assigned to the new project because of his military record and flight experience. Niki has a hard time letting go of the image she has carried of Kyle since high school.
The letter she received just before her brother was killed by an IED carries a passion about getting to know Jesus. Somehow Niki has to go beyond the past, and move beyond her painful memories, then when her heart is open, she finds the One who can hold her heart and even make Todd, who seems to be sabotaging the project, insignificant.
Karen Baney has penned a story and characters that linger past the last page. The reader is invited into the world of a computer programmer, a software engineer, or coders, or developers or whatever one wishes to call them. The characters are a “snarky, funny, unique breed.” Baney’s faith allows her characters to change.

“Niki Turner has been hurt in the past, lost her parents to an accident and God also took her brother a few years after the accident. This is the main reason why she doesn't want to keep anyone close to her heart. She is afraid of meeting other people simply because she might lose them too.
She wants nothing from other people and then she found herself working with Kyle Jacobs, Marcy's (Niki's best friend) brother. Niki is attracted to Kyle but she fears any romantic relationship with him won't last so she's shutting him out. However, Kyle is determined to win her heart.
At first, I didn't feel any connection with the main character, Niki Turner. I was kind of annoyed with her attitude although I was really trying my best to understand her situation. When Kyle Jacobs appears in the story, I began to like Niki. I began to understand her situation. Kyle is one sweet guy and I liked him instantly. He is also carrying a not-so-good past but I'm glad it didn't take too long for him to realize that digging up the past does no good. I enjoyed reading the story. Though there's one more thing I just couldn't believe in the story. When Niki's brother died, Kyle didn't know about it! It's just unbelievable because Kyle's sister is Niki's best friend! And to think that more than eight years has passed and Marcy never told her brother about it??
All in all, Nickels is a sweet story of trusting and finding love again. I found it a good Christian novel though I think it is "too clean" for my taste. If you want a "hard core" Christian novel, you might one to pick up this book. ”
“A fast read...could relate to her personality.”

Two people who have been caught up in the past and trying to overcome those differences. They have a great group of support from friends and family.
I wouldn’t say it was an unusual story, as to me it was pretty typical for a romance. However, there were different events within the book that made it different enough that I enjoyed it. It does have a lot of religious actions and events. To me that was the point of the story, finding Jesus, and other ways to deal with hard times and events that we may not understand.
I enjoyed Niki’s character. She is a workaholic which is understandable, but amazing that she has accomplished so much. Kyle was also very likeable and a well developed character. I was a little annoyed with the off-side romance/relationship for Marcy and Chad, but not so much that it ruined the story.
This is a very well written book with great characters and events. The author did not go into too many details of the country, but enough that I could envision what the area looked like.
Verdict: 4 stars. Even though it was a typical romance, there were enough different events and interesting events that I enjoyed the story.

“Okay, I really enjoyed this one! At first I wasn't sure the life of a software engineer would be all that riveting, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's actually quite interesting. While Niki's job is rather technical, I felt it was handled very well and written so that anyone can follow. :)
Niki is a great character, very realistic with past hurts and wounds that still haunt her; it's encouraging to see her grow and work through her issues. I also enjoyed Kyle as well, he's sort of a broken person yet he's still fun and tries to please God with his actions and motives. The story bounces back and forth being told from both Niki and Kyle's perspective's.
I have to admit part of my enjoyment came from the fact that the book is set in the Phoenix-Metro area of Arizona. I used to live there, and I just found it unbelievably cool when I recognized the street names, freeways, landmarks, and other things...including the 110+ degree heat! It was like I was right there beside Niki, and it all gave me sort of a nostalgic feeling. For those who haven't lived in AZ, the setting will seem just like any other, but for those who have lived there...well, it's just really cool!
So, bottom-line: Pick this one up, you'll be glad you did! An excellent read. ”
“Niki Turner thought she had life all figured out. When God took her parents and her brother Jack, she felt that if she just didn't keep anyone close, she wouldn't lose anyone else or have to deal with the grief that has bound her personal life for the last 8 years.
She has vowed to just remain friends with her room mate Marcy and focus the remainder of her time at her job, Hamilton Production Solutions, as a software engineer. But Marcy had a goal this year, and that was to make sure that love found it's way into Niki's life. After all , all work and no play, makes for a very dull and boring life. She vowed to make it her New Year's resolution to find Niki a man who would love her, fall in love and live the proverbial "happily ever after" life!
However when a dream job at Heliotronics is offered to Niki, she sees this as a confirmation that she's been on the right track her whole life. However when Kyle Jacobs is assigned to work with her, she begins to question God's sense of humor after all. Kyle Jacobs, Marcy's older brother, has been the person she dreaded her entire four years of high school. He made it his mission to torture her no matter what opportunity presented itself and now here she was, stuck at her dream job with her worst enemy. But Kyle is a changed man, one both physically and spiritually, and now he has to find a way to prove to Niki that the past is really in the past.
In the newest novel from Karen Baney, Nickels, is her first contemporary fiction about second chances and seeing what God's plan is for us in life instead of what we perceive it's all about. I received this wonderful eBook compliments of Karen Baney and was more than delighted with this wonderfully, well-written story of dealing with the loss of loved ones and finally finding a way to move forward. The journey isn't an easy one but teaches us the value of God's unconditional love for us and the meaning of having friends along the way. I rate this book a full 5 out of 5 stars and am so excited to be able to share this review with my readers. This is one you won't want to miss out on. Well done again Karen!”
“Oh what a fun book to read! This is one of those block your day-curl on the couch with a cup of hot tea-books! You will laugh hard, and smile through tears and feel Niki's pain in every bone of your body. You will be outraged at some of the things Kyle does and wonder what in the world he was thinking. You will pull for them, and yell at them, and laugh with them, and cry with them, you will sometimes want to knock some sense into them... yes, it is a book that will keep you engaged for the duration...you will definitely find a hard time putting it down to do "real life" things. The writing is strong, though the characters can at times come through as a bit too "goody-goody" (here was when I felt the need at times to knock some sense into them), but in the end you will love them and agree with their decisions. A fun book, a great read, wonderful characters! ”

Friend Marcy tries too hard to marry her off, while Niki seeks only success and approbation for her undoubted computing skills. Meanwhile Kyle, suffering his own losses, prays for second chances without realizing what he might find. This story starts slowly, setting up characters and situations, but finds its speed when estranged friends finally fall into step with each other.
Author Karen Baney creates an interesting mix of close friends keeping distant secrets in her Christian romance, Nickels, and it’s enjoyable to find a female protagonist familiar with computers. The background is shaped by 9/11 and the foreground by software programming, but wars of the mind replace those of gun and a quiet undercurrent of faith grows strong, offering anguish or relief.
The race to complete computer code on time feels familiar to me as a former software engineer. The longer race to heal wounds is carefully steered through interesting questions of God’s care and why he allows those wounds to happen. The whole is a sweet romance with all the right hurdles to cross, wise lessons in faith, great scenery, Arizona sunshine, computer programmers, and even a game of Taboo. In this pleasing romance, wounds can be healed, love can grow, and holes in lives are gracefully filled by their creator.
