This was my favorite part of the Lorax at age five, the part in which the Once-Ler was peeking through the shutters, a repository of unknown mysteries,...” see full review » see other reviews » |

this book was banned because of them cutting down trees and forests. this book was about selfishness and not caring about other people and living things. that is why this book was banned.”

After reading it for the first time since early childhood, I have come to find that there is so much more to this book than a fun, imaginary place in which kids can indulge themselves. Yes, the Lorax is a creature that disagreed with the Once-ler in saying that the environment should be conserved at any cost, but the Once-ler had a legitimate argument in using the trees for massive production. It all comes down to whether the environment or business is more important, and it simply can’t be solved. The Lorax does however attempt to force readers to choose the environment over industry. The book has an important message to stay true to our planet Earth, and take care of it not only so we can enjoy our lives here, but so those down the road may benefit from an environment in good condition.
Of course, the book was banned because it only conveyed one side of the issue regarding our duties as humans to preserve our environment. Although it is thought of as wrong to compose a story forcing a certain opinion, I think that if one side of this issue were to be written on, Dr. Suess chose the correct side. It simply seems more moral to tell children to avoid cutting down trees rather than tell them to cut them down for materials. I’m not saying one is better than the other, but for young minds, saving the earth is a much more positive theme to inject a book with.
