I loved the intrigue in the Vatican, the new info I got on Marian apparitions throughout the centuries, the wonderful, suspenseful pace that is a Steve Berry novel. The political message finally revealed at the end was WONDERFUL. It was rough seeing a pope (though fictional) who was a good man (somewhat different from my traditional opinion on the historical papacy) commit suicide so early in the novel. That was a profound loss in the story. Berry wrapped up so many of the "old school"...

Truth be told, I was actually almost offended reading this book. The pace was great, the Vatican politics were compelling and interesting, but I really stumbled when it came to some of the religious stuff. That being said, it was also one of the more enjoyable and quick reads I've had in a long time. I wanted to know what was happening and how the pieces came together. So, I was really torn when trying to decide how to rate this book. As a work of fiction and an enjoyable read I give it a 4...
