The Flippers: Some of us have a lot in common. Many have their mothers to blame for getting us hooked on books. (Thanks, Moms). Many of us have found ourselves sitting on the floor of Book Sale branches scrounging for the best buy. Many of us went through a Nancy Drew phase. Many of us consider our books as valued possessions worth saving in a fire.
Yet, we are also diverse. Some are into classics, Filipino literature, chicklit, fantasy, fiction, non-fiction, cookbooks, serious novels, fluffy pretty books. Some of us like our books crisp, clean, and covered up in plastic. Some of us prefer the musty, dog-eared books fished from a pre-used book bin so we can inhale the history of its previous owners. A poll on favorite authors will reveal just how diverse we are. The Filipino diaspora also means we run the whole spectrum in terms of geographical location and cultural influences. Our opinions differ, and that's what makes this a rich and enriching place.
We're split just about midway between monobookists (look it up here) and polybookists, toilet readers and toilet wall starers.
We're all Filipinos -- whether it's by blood, by birth, by marriage, or by choice. And we all love books and talking about books.
The Rules:
1) Be respectful. -- Keep it friendly. No personal attacks. No insults. No name-calling. No flames.
Debates are fine. You can bust your veins dissing or defending the works of authors, arguing the merits and demerits of a literary piece till the sun comes out. But respect the members. We don’t have to like each other here. But we have to respect differences of opinions, personalities, and perspectives.
Remember that when somebody does not think the way you do, that does not make them stupid. The fact that their ideas are different from yours does not make them uneducated. Beware those who cannot respect other people's world views; it could be your own ignorance and narrow mindedness showing. Let's just be grateful that we can learn from others' perspectives.
2) No profanity.
3) No endorsement of illegal materials.
4) No pornographic content. No links to pornographic sites.
5) No black propaganda against any of the members and other personalities.
6) Authors, publishers, and book distributors may promote their products and events. Keep it book-related. No ads for realty, no invitations to MLM events, no invites to seminars that do not have anything to do with books.
We might concede to free food and wine tasting events though.
