“it was great. i loved it. though some parts are slow-going. maybe it is because i read it in short sections and so one page felt like ten. you should read it it's really cool and realistic. the author made me feel like it really acually happened to the guy. ”

Couldn't finish, and only got through half. It was a kindness, not forcing myself to finish it. ”

I love sci-fi stories and this has to be one of my favourites. It was revolutionary when it was written and is still a story told and re-told today. Its been made into several movies too, the most recent starring Tom Cruise.
The story is set in Victorian England when Aliens from Mars attack the earth in terrible metal machines. These giant machines stride across the landscape vaporising soldiers and capturing helpless civilians with mechanical claws, throwing them into huge baskets then draining their blood to consume as food. All the while the narrator struggles to find his wife amidst the chaos whilst trying to avoid the murderous aliens that ravage the land killing all they encounter.
Humanities weapons are practically useless against the towering war machines and the struggle for survival becomes increasingly harder as the story progresses. The narrator (whose name we never learn) comes across all sorts of colourful characters on his journey including a lost soldier and a half-mad preacher who nearly gets them killed with his fevered ranting.
The most thrilling part for me was when the narrator and the preacher become trapped under a ruined house whilst all about them the aliens hunt for humans...gripping stuff
This book will not disappoint
The story is terrifying and will have you nervous to turn the page (yet compelled to do so) I find it particularly nerve”
