Oh the descrepensies in the text. Obviously Mr. Salvatore would have to change a few things when he went back in time to develope Drizzt's character. So for those who read the Dark Elf trilogy first, bear in mind that there are a few things different in the Icewind Dale trilogy that are smoothed out as the story progresses. the only really big changes were how Guenhwyvar came to be Drizzt's companion and Drizzt's overall age. Otherwise, the stories fit together rather seamlessly. Considering that The Crystal Shard started out as a book about Wulfgar, it sure does seem to be a book about the entire cast of characters, especially drizzt. It is no wonder that Mr. Salvatore decided to expand on Drizzt's character, nor that readers wanted such an expansion.

Ah, the book that started it all for me...way back in 9th grade. Fond memories. Thanks to this wonderful book we will see cheap imitation knockoffs and horrible variations of the name Drizzt Do'Urden in online avatars and RPG's for centuries to come. Probably not the best book to read if your years past puberty have reached double digits. But, still a nostalgic classic to me.

Though Salvatore was clearly inexperienced when he wrote this book, it is still a great example of modern fantasy. Once I got past the first fifty pages or so, it was a quick, exciting read. Salvatore has a knack for inventing likable, yet believable, characters, and he does not disappoint in this introduction to the Icewind Dale saga, introducing us to the enigmatic barbarian boy, Wulfgar.

An awesome trilogy. I discovered the writer with this, his first set of books, and have loved everything he has done since. A great storyline, captaviting characters and a good fantasy world make this a must read for fantasy fans. My highest recommendation.

The first in a series of awesome books. Drizzt is a character that inspires sympathy and empathy but never makes you feel sorry for him. Salvatore is a wonderful writer.
