  • Pablito: Apache leader who is trying to escape the White man's world and live as an Apache along with his people.
  • Patrick James O'Connell: Left Ireland as a young man to find his fortune. He came to America and joined the Army just before the Civil War. Now he is leading the patrol following the Apache band.
  • Lt. Sheridan: Fresh out of West Point and leading his first patrol in pursuit of Pablito and his band. This is nothing like he learned about in the Academy.
  • Jackson: A trooper who grew up in the western mountains and desert. His family had been there since the Fur Trade era. An excellent scout.
  • Corporal Donaldson: One or the Troops junior NCOs.
  • Molly Sullivan: A flaming haired Irish woman who is alone in the desert waiting for her father's return. She is not aware of the fact that he had been killed in the raid by Pablito's band.
  • Chato: A friend of Eyes Turn Red who also craves the taste of the white man's whiskey.
  • Smithers: Experienced scout and tracker, who had served in the Confederate Army during the war.
  • Hughes: Another junior NCO.
