“This book was very action packed and engaging! Although this is a fictional account of the attacks of 9/11, this personal story could have happened. This has real facts of the terrorists attacks and is a great read for someone who is interested in this time in our history.”see full review » see other reviews »

“I Survived: The Attacks of September 11th, 2001: Genre: Historical Fiction, Realistic Fiction, Series
I Survived: The Attacks of September 11th, 2001 was written by Lauren Tarshis. This historical and realistic fiction is a shares the terror of 9/11 from the perspective of character Lucas. Lucas became a huge football fan after spending time with his Uncle Benny, who along with Lucas’ dad are both FDNY firefighters. During August 2001, Lucas gets his third concussion and spends a few weeks recovering, unable to play football. Then, on September 10th, 2001, Lucas and his mom head to the doctor to get him cleared to play again. The doctor recommends that Lucas does not return to the team, because concussions are dangerous. Lucas is devastated.
On the morning on 9/11, Lucas skips school and heads to the firehouse to talk to Uncle Benny and to get his support about continuing to be on the team. While they talk, Lucas and Uncle Benny see the American Airlines flight crash into tower one. Lucas sees the firehouse spring into action and when he watches the second plane crash into the second tower he knows that he has to help.
I remember where I was when the first plane crashed. I remember the devastating days following, trying to make sense of this act of terror. When I got my first teaching job, one of my student’s birth date was 9/11/01. This angelic little girl was born on a date that would stand in history for this horrific act of terrorism. I realized then that my students would be learning about this catastrophe from books and from their elders. This event, which has shaped the world that our young children are growing up in, is not one that they remember or know of.
I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from the series. I like that the author decided to share a happy ending for Lucas, Uncle Benny and his dad, but depicted the scary scene and pain that followed. I highly recommend that you read this book!

“This is about a boy named Noah and his story with 9/11. Noah and his dad had planned an outing for noah's birthday. His dad was a firefighter and on the morning of 9/11 their lives were changed forever. This is a story that kids can connect with, because it is another kid's story. It makes the events of that day become real to them because they were not alive to experience it like we were.”Jenna Montgomery wrote this review 4 weeks ago. “One account of the terrifying events of 9/11/2001 in New York City. While the actual novel seems a bit lacking in emotion, the author's note about where she was on that day and the Q & A section are a must-read.”Glacier Point Middle School Library wrote this review Monday, May 6, 2013.
