Beloved is a book that tells about the toilsome life of a slave woman. Sethe, the main character in the novel, was forced to make a difficult choice early in her life. This decision literally "haunts" her for the rest of her life. Sethe must live in a house where the ghost of her baby girl constantly torments her. Sethe is never graced with the pleasure of a visitor because every one of them is afraid to enter the haunted house. Sethe not only has to deal with being abandoned by her friends, but she also finds herself constantly struggling wiht the events of her past. This book deals with the issues of family, loneliness, and difficult choices. These controversial topics make this book interesting, but unfortunately, the confusing writing style often prevented me from understanding exactly what was going on. One of the reasons why I like this book is because it contains original content. Many of the experiences that the author placed in this book were interesting and new; however, the confusion in the explanation of these events lessened the impact that the experience should of had on the reader. Overall, Beloved is a good book to read. The detailed look into slavery is a very moving experience. I would recommend this book to a higher age group, mainly from 15 and over, due to language and sexual themes. Beloved is a great book because it teaches something to everyone that reads it.
