The best war book i've ever read. Full of fascinating stories, colourful historical characters and terrible but exciting battles.

The battle for control of the city of Stalingrad was one of the most terrible, violent and brutal of the entire war. The loss of life and bloodshed can hardly be exaggerated. War crimes were committed by both the Germans and the Russians (including the Russian Communists charming habit of killing their own men if they violated Stalins order of "Not one step backwards")

Stalingrad was pounded by German artiliary and aircraft until it was little more than a smoking pile of rubble, Russian snipers excelled and terrorised German troops throughout the city. Russian soldiers and peasants alike struggled to survive through the fighting and the extreme winter weather. Running battles were fought at almost point blank range in the streets, runing buildings and sewer systems.

The book is not dry or dull at all and vividly describes the conditions and fighting. All I can say is that i'm glad I wasn't living in Stalingrad during that conflict.

Meticulous account by Beevor of an amazing victory for the Russians. Beevor added more detail at Melbourne Writer's Festival in 2009. From his research approx 13,000 Russian soldiers were executed by own officers. After battle, Russians raped 2 million women on the way to Berlin.

Fantastic, gripping account, including a review of the long-term effects of the siege on the rest of the war and its final outcome.

This book takes the many details of this epic siege, and delivers it in an interesting read.
