Whale Talk

by Chris Crutcher

T. J. Jones is black, Japanese, and white; his given name is The Tao (honest!), and he's the son of a woman who abandoned him when she got heavily into crack and crank. As a child he was full of rage, but now as a senior in high school he's pretty much overcome all that. With the help of a good therapist and his decent, loving, ex-hippie adoptive parents, he's not only fairly even-keeled,... (read more)

Well written, engaging coming of age story. TJ was given a second chance in life, and has a very generous spirit. He leads a band of misfits brought together on a swim team.

I wasn't too terribly impressed with this book. I was surprised at how much foul language there was in a book for young adults. It was predictable and I can't see myself recommending this book to anyone.

I just finished _Whale Talk_ by Chris Crutcher, a new author for me. This is a good book for teens, especially boys who gravitate towards sports stories. Yes, it's got plenty of the hormones and competitiveness, but it also reminds us boys are as complex emotionally as girls. A group of misfits form a swim team and learn things about themselves and gain a sense of belonging they've never know. Add to that mix issues of race, bigotry, prejudice (on a variety of levels), child welfare, foster care, drugs and fatal, life altering experiences and you've got _Whale Talk_. Crutcher does a great job at voice and characterization and does well with life lessons without going over the top. The target audience is YA but any adult who cares about youth can appreciate the novel. I'm really glad I read the recommended title. Solid read.
