Stella and Angel are two young girls staying as foster kids with Stella's great-aunt Louise. Stella's mother is attempting to get her life together, and Angel is waiting for her aunt to settle in America. Louise dies of heart failure. Unwilling to go back into the system, Stella and Angel bury her in the garden, lie to Louise's friend George about her condition, and take care of the rental cottages George and Louise manage. The girls collect money by tips and babysitting, also foraging the cottages for food after the renters leave. As the summer goes on, the girls develop a friendship. The girls plan to go back to their mother and aunt after the summer, with Stella assuming she and her mother will inherit Louise's house. When Stella learns George actually owns it, she realizes she will never have the life she hoped and calls George and the police to tell them the truth. The girls are told they will return to foster care, but Angel's aunt comes and George offers her the job of caretaker. Eventually Angel and her aunt move to a bakery, and George applies to be foster parent of Stella and moves back into the house.
