This is one of those novels where I have to tiptoe lightly to not ruin important plot points.

An intriguing, and macabre, tale of two young girls who just want to belong to a family.

Stella and Angel make interesting characters in this novel as they both bring a different...

It is descriptive and funny. It's sad at first, but gets really happy. The reason I like it is because the story is realistic. By Emily

Good story but a little weird. Stella lives with her great Aunt Louise on Cape Cod along with Angel, a foster child. One day, Louise dies leaving the girls alone & uncertain about what to do. Neither of them want to go back into foster care, so they decide to bury her & continue living in the house, taking care of the summer rental bungalows & earning enough money to fulfill their dreams. Things go along fine until finally Stella breaks down & calls the authorities. Angel had threatened to leave but decides instead to stay with Stella & face the music. Interesting story, a bit morbid in spots.

This is a creatively told story that I absolutely loved. It's such a cute tale with sad elements. You just have to love a story of two 12 year olds trying to make it on their own for the summer, and in the process, end up burying their dead great aunt in the backyard garden. It is a sadly true tale, but Pennypacker tells it with gusto, enthusiasm and a wit that only a 12 year old would know. I loved every minute of this story.

Very touching story of two girls who take care of themselves when their foster parent unexpectedly dies; great book for girls, might hold the attention of boys because of the dead body in the garden

Not certain of the audience since the story is about two young girls burying their foster mother after she has died of natural causes because they do not want to be returned to the foster care program. The story is far-fetched but you find yourself liking both girls who become friends over the summer while they try to carry on their foster mother's job.

Liked this book very much. Thought the characters were well developed. Always interesting to read about how resourceful, in this case 11 year old girls, survive on their own.

Both humorous and touching, this book is about 2 girls living with a senior citizen in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Stella's great aunt Louise takes in foster child Angel but the two girls don't get along. Then Louise dies and the girls try to cope without letting anyone else know about her death. The book reminded me of Where the Lilies Bloom and the Cynthia Voigt books about the Tillerman children.

I was expecting another Clementine, but this book was much more serious. I loved the characters for their resourcefulness and willingness to grow in spite of some scary life situations.
