I had high expectations because the Psysick Book of Deliverance Dane was so well-written with deep characters and a somewhat new twist on a topic that has had many novels written about it. The House of Velvet and Glass was not as rich in character nor was the subject matter (spiritualism) ver well developed. I never really connected with Sybil or Harley, nor did I feel much toward Helen and Eulah. The best character was Lan, but even his story wasn't as well developed as it could have been. Spirtualism was never really debated with the main "dissentor" coming to accept it all fairly easily. I found the scenes in the opium dens (at least the first two) to be the most compelling, but even then the scenes just hinted at the horror and mystique. I read the book quickly and was eventually absorbed in the story, but this was defintely not as strong as the Psysick Book of Deliverane Dane.
