I really enjoyed this story and that's exactly what it is- a good story. The author proves himself a master storyteller. It comes across as a morality lesson, a tale. You never find out all you really want to kniw about the characters but it's the storytelling that captures the reader. I stayed...

I read this mostly on Audible and partly on the Kindle. I enjoyed it, but it left me sort of empty. Charlie may haved loved Sam, but he sure did his best to damage him. (Where were the parents?)
    I liked the dog.

    • Note: I am using bullet points to make it easier for me:
    • 3.5 stars. A very well written tragic story. Some sentences were gems with the way the author put words together.
    • Sense of place and time – small Virginia town in 1949, race relations
    • Well developed characters
    • Unanswered question – Where did Charlie make enough money for the suitcase of cash he used to purchase all that property?
    • Was it love or obsession for Charlie?
    • Absolutely hated the ministers talk of sin and going to hell
    • Most perplexing question – it was obvious Charlie was fond of Sam and treated him like a son at times. Why would he ever allow Sam to witness the tragic incident at Sylvan’s house? He had to know the trauma would haunt Sam forever.

I have mixed emotions about this book. It was well written, but had a horrible ending and too many questions left unanswered. The main character, Charlie, was a man with faults, but a good man. Mysterious too, but we never find out why. The other main characters are so flawed, you can't help but feel sorry for them. So many emotions...lust, greed, gluttony and innocence too. I had hoped for a semi happy ending.

It's a tragedy, but the characters and writing are masterful and I couldn't put it down. Another Algonquin book. He also wrote A Reliable Wife which I thought was a really good book.

An emotional novel that drew me in. Charlie was a good man who wanted what he shouldn't have had. Sylvan was young and lived in a dream world. When reality hit she was unable to cope with it and was lost, both to herself and Charlie. Young Sam witnessed it all. Lots of questions that are left unanswered but I was so engrossed in the glimpse of the lives of Charlie, Sam, and Sylvan as well as the town of Brownsburg, VA.
