• Elliot North: The protagonist of the story, she lives on the North estate with her father and sister. Although her father is Baron, she unofficially runs most of the estate. She's a Luddite.
• Malakai 'Kai' Wentforth: A Post, he used to work on the farm, but ran away four years ago to become a free Post. He was Elliot's childhood sweetheart and best friend. He has now made a name for himself, and has a fortune to his name.
• Jef: Son of Dee, the forewoman of the North Estate and her lover, Thom who is in hiding. He's a Post.
• Dee: A forewoman on Elliot's farm. She has a close relationship with Elliot, and looks after her. She is the mother of Jef, and also a Post.
• Ro: A girl on the North Estate. She was born on the same day as Elliot and Kai. Since she is Reduced, she cannot speak very well, and can only manage a few one syllable words. She is a very kind and caring girl, and a good friend to both Elliot and Kai. She loved flowers, and has started cross-breeding her own.
• Tatiana North: Elliot's older sister, she is the official household manager. However, she is much more concerned with being fashionable, and can be a bit of a snob.
• Baron Zachariah North: Baron North is the owner of the North estate, and the father of Tatiana and Elliot. He is stubborn, and can be cruel. He wants to have power and control, and that desire can lead him to ignore and mistreat his workers. He is an incompetent farmer, and doesn't do the estate any good.
• Felicia Innovation: The wife of Admiral Innovation, she is a free Post. She is a gifted healer, and travels with the Cloud Fleet.
• Admiral Innovation: The wife of Felicia, he is the leader of the Cloud Fleet. Like his wife, he is also a free Post, and has made a name and fortune for himself by traveling and discovering great new objects.
• Andromeda Phoenix: A captain of the Cloud Fleet, she is slightly older than Elliot. She can appear cold and harsh at times. She distrusts Luddites in general. Like everyone else in the Cloud Fleet, she is a free Post.
• Donovan Phoenix: The brother of Andromeda Phoenix, he is also a captain of the Cloud Fleet. He is a particularly gifted musician.
• Elliot Boatwright: Elliot and Tatiana's grandfather, and the father-in-law of Baron North. He is Elliot's namesake, and owner of the estate next to the Norths, the Boatwright Estate. He is an old man, and has suffered from strokes, so he can't speak very well anymore.
• Olivia Grove: Olivia Grove is a pretty young girl who lives next to Elliot. She is a Luddite, and the younger sister of Horatio.
• Horatio Grove: Horatio is the older brother of Olivia, and a friend of Elliot's. He lives on the Grove estate, which lies next to the North estate.
• Baroness Lucinda Channel: Baroness Channel runs Channel City, and is a Luddite, like all people in positions of high power.
• Benedict North: Elliot's cousin, he is the true heir to the North estate. He was banished eight years ago, and the rumor was it was because he took advantage of a Reduced girl.
• Thom: Thom is Dee's lover and partner. He is the father of Jef.
• Victoria North: Elliot's mother, she passed away four years ago.
• Sophia Innovation: Sophia was the daughter of Admiral and Felicia Innovation. She was very sick and died of her illness.
• Gill: Gill is one of the Posts who works on the North estate.

• Luddites: Ruling class who own most of the land. They are the ones who salvaged humanity after the Reduction happened. They are against most technology, and consider the Reduced and Posts below them.
• Reduced: Lower class, born with limited mental or speech capacity. They serve the Luddites.
• Posts/CORs: Lower class, they are offspring or descendants of Reduced parents. They possess all the capabilities of the Luddites, but have the same social standing as Reduced people. Post stands for 'post reductionist'. They are also called CORs for 'children of the Reduction', but they prefer to be called Posts.

• Reduced: A caste of people who have limited capacities, usually mental. Considered to be the result of genetic experimentation generations in the past.
• Post: Children or descendants of Reduced who have normal physical and mental capacity, on the same level intellectually as the Luddites. Still considered part of the Reduced caste. Called CORs, Children of Reduced, by their Luddite masters.
• Luddite: Ruling class who shun most advanced technology to protect society. Self-declared protectors of the Reduced population, though few are completely generous.
