Augustus Tomlin is found floating face-down in the waters just off the Florida coast when he is just a year old. He spends most of his young life trying to overcome a paralyzing fear of water, and when his adoptive parents bring back to the Keys from his home state of Arizona at age fourteen, his life changes forever after a ferocious attack by several nightmarish creatures waiting for him in a cove, and a daring rescue by a girl riding a massive sea creature that resembles a dragon.
Not long after that Augie is introduced to the magical world of Grim's Peak where underwater lakes, trimsticks and wimballs, cryptoquariums, and water arches are the order of the day.
Augie is immersed in this new world and must make new friends, learn how to co-exist with the sometimes unfriendly plants, adverse underwater weather conditions, and amazing creatures like the hippocamp, which is a creature of legend said to be half-horse half-fish; all the while trying to figure out who his parents were; who is trying to kill him; and what his connection is to the town's founding fathers whose centuries old secrets threaten to throw the residents of this amazing world into complete chaos...
“(From one of the lost letters of Hingrit Grim)"What a truly fascinating world we have been introduced to. There are plants and animals that exist here which even the most imaginative minds could not conceive of. I received my first lesson today at the helm of one of these magnificent beasts. Skittish yet willful, they present many challenges I hope to overcome. I have not received a response to my last two letters. I hope this one finds you so that I may finally hear word that you are alright..."”

As they neared he began to realize that many of them were attached to a hodgepodge of structures, big and small, in every color imaginable, all intermingled without any obvious sign of organization, as though they had been thrown up into the air like seeds and left to sprout wherever they had fallen. There was a flurry of activity in the surrounding waters; people going to and fro, some swimming, some riding on the backs of hippocamps, and others who were being transported in fast moving, zigzagging carriages that made the trip they had just been on look tame. Augie noticed that there were no roads or pathways anywhere in sight, which made sense since it appeared that commuting in this world took place above the sea floor. “This is where you live?” Augie said astounded. “Welcome to Grim’s Peak,” Erim said.”
“Ahead, Pik knifed through the water, leading them deeper and deeper with each stroke. A little while later the sea floor came into view. Augie had to fight back another surge of panic when he started thinking about how deep they were and how far away the surface was. The sandy bottom sloped away gently and was mostly bare. Pik made for a large cluster of rocks probably twenty or thirty feet tall, and when they all rounded the first set of boulders Augie was confronted by the most spectacular sight he’d laid his eyes on to date...”
