“Augie turned his attention back to the lights. As they neared he began to realize that many of them were attached to a hodgepodge of structures, big and small, in every color imaginable, all intermingled without any obvious sign of organization, as though they had been thrown up into the air like seeds and left to sprout wherever they had fallen. There was a flurry of activity in the surrounding waters; people going to and fro, some swimming, some riding on the backs of hippocamps, and others who were being transported in fast moving, zigzagging carriages that made the trip they had just been on look tame. Augie noticed that there were no roads or pathways anywhere in sight, which made sense since it appeared that commuting in this world took place above the sea floor. “This is where you live?” Augie said astounded. “Welcome to Grim’s Peak,” Erim said.”
“Ahead, Pik knifed through the water, leading them deeper and deeper with each stroke. A little while later the sea floor came into view. Augie had to fight back another surge of panic when he started thinking about how deep they were and how far away the surface was. The sandy bottom sloped away gently and was mostly bare. Pik made for a large cluster of rocks probably twenty or thirty feet tall, and when they all rounded the first set of boulders Augie was confronted by the most spectacular sight he’d laid his eyes on to date...”
