  • Gavin Sasaki: Main protagonist. Newspaperman who begins to fall apart after his fiance leaves him and after an odd visit with his sister, wherein he finds out he may have a child.
  • Anna Montgomery: Gavin's high school girlfriend and mother of Chloe, his son. On the run from Paul, from whom she stole $120,000 in drug money.
  • Daniel: One of the original members of the Lola Quartet, Daniel is now a policeman. He feels responsible for Anna as he introduced her to Paul. Gavin contacts Daniel when he returns to Florida.
  • Jack: Another member of the original Lola Quartet, Jack loves music, but early in college, he realizes it also exhausts him. He has a pill addiction and lives in a tent in the back of a friend's yard.
  • Chloe: Anna and Gavin's daughter. 9 years old.
  • Sasha: Sasha is Anna's older sister and an original member of the Lola Quartet. They have the same mother but different fathers. Sasha has always felt she has to protect Anna because Anna's mother and father were abusive. Sasha has a gambling addiction.
  • Paul: Paul lives in Utah and had worked with Daniel one summer. Daniel takes Anna to stay with Paul while she waits to give birth to Chloe. Paul is now a drug dealer and extremely violent. When Anna steals money from him, he vows to punish her.
  • Eilo: Eilo is Gavin's older sister and a foreclosure real estate agent. She, too, has always felt like a protector as Gavin gets really ill in the heat. Their mother is an alcoholic; their dad is distant.
