Jan Brett tells a wonderful story and her illustrations are superb!

Annie's cat disappears in the middle of winter. In order to find another pet, Annie puts corn cakes out in the field. They attract numerous wild animals, each unsuitable for a pet in his own way. Eventually spring arrives and the wild animals leave now that they can find food on their own. Much to Annie's delight, Fluffy returns with a gift of her own. :)

Both Beetle and Fritz were curled up in my ap as I read this story to them this evening.

This has got to be one of my favourite books discovered when reading tomy kids when little. What a discovery! It is so charmingly illustrated, with tonnes of details and cryptic foreshadowing on the illustrated wood carving borders of each double-page spread. Jan Brett's best work is displayed here, borrowing form her Norweigan heritage and love of that style of decoration. It makes me want to go and read it again. This and "The Mitten" must be her best two stories. Good fables too. After reading one of these books, you'll wanto to cozy down into a thick quilted duvet cover or something nd enjoy a hot cuppa!

illustrated books are a favorite of mine. this was the first book of jan brett's that i bought years ago. the main story is illustrated on the pages, but the charm is in the borders of each page. behind the scenes stories are ilustrated subtley in the borders. my kids always knew what to get me for christmas: another jan brett ilustrated book.
